About Dr. Wayne Coates – Professor Emeritus, The University of Arizona
Over the duration of my career I have focused my research primarily on crop development, but have also conducted extensive equipment development and mechanization trials. This has involved testing and overseeing development of tillage systems, spraying systems and forage systems. In addition to equipment development, my research has included planting, cultivation, irrigation and harvesting of test plots of numerous crops in various locations of the world.
Most of my time the past several years has been devoted to the production, evaluation and commercialization of chia (Salvia hispanica L.). However I do participate in various running events, and when time permits work on my family’s genealogy.
If you’re interested in learning a bit more about me, here’s a little more info…

Running Adventures
I started running in 1984 at noon to get some exercise and to get a break from the office. In 1987 when working in the Middle East I was introduced to Hashing (a worldwide organization with the motto “Drinkers with a Running Problem”) and started to participate in this “sport”. In 2000 I decided for some unknown reason to enter the Tucson Marathon. I ran that race and loved every minute of it. From that time on some might say it got out of hand, as I now participate in 50 and 100 mile races.
