Abstract

The effect on serum lipid profile of Wistar rats fed chia seed or oil for 30 days was studied. The CH group received a diet containing 15% chia seed and sufficient casein to provide 20% protein in the diet; the A group received casein as the protein source, and the same amount of chia oil as was delivered by the 15% chia seed diet; the C group (control) received only casein as the protein source. Total cholesterol (CHO), triglycerides (G), HDL and LDL cholesterol, and the CHO:HDL ratio were measured. Compared to the control the CH treatment resulted in statistically lower CHO and TG values and a higher HDL value; while treatment A gave a statistically lower value for TG and a higher value for HDL; the CHO:HDL ratio was significantly lower for both the CH and A treatments compared with the control. Thus adding chia to the diet, either as seed or oil, provided a hypolipidemic effect.
